Happy New FEAR

Work all year and what do you get, another year older and deeper in debt…

Two weeks into the new year and not an entry to be seen. Shocking I know. I’ve got an entry summing up the best music of the last year almost ready to go but it’s taking a long while to get finished and out the door. So I figured I’d better write something, lest everyone think I’ve died or something.

So yeah, it’s a brave new year. Yippee-kiy-o. I’m not that fussed to be honest. I’m kind of glad to see the back of 2007 – it wasn’t the most enjoyable year of my life – but I’m not terribly convinced that 2008 is going to be wildly better. Hmmm.

But at least I’ve been doing plenty of stuff. Yesterday I caught up with Rebecca, Dom and Jakob in Mount Lawley. On Thursday night I met up with Katie in Subiaco and we had dinner at Wagamama. We also almost got free tickets to the opening night of “Keating the Musical” – although I really wasn’t up to it and we had to turn them down. I’ve also caught up with Fabes and Ryan a bit – we’ve been working on a project that I can’t really say much about :). And of course I’ve been working on a few projects of my own…

I’m also back at work, which after two weeks of getting up at 9:00am is a bit of a blow.

Hmmm, that’ll do for now. I’m too tired to try and be interesting. But check out this rather amusing webcomic.

A sad attempt at channeling Building Blog

I can’t off the top of my head find the name or details, but apparently someone’s released a two terabyte external hard drive with built in wireless networking capability. This means that you can access it through your wireless network (or even remotely over the net) even when your PC is turned off. Which gives me a wacky idea…

So you’re building a house. You buy one of these units, load it with two terrabytes of music, movies and other content, and seal it up inside one of the walls, hooked up to mains power. You finish the build and sell the place to some complete luddite who’s never going to turn on a computer, let alone own one.

Time passes. Eight years later the luddite sells the house to someone fairly tech savvy. Their first order of business is to set up their wireless network. They get everything plugged in and working, then notice an extra device…

You can tell I’ve been reading Building Blog can’t you? πŸ˜€

It’s actually a Dragon, just don’t tell the City that…

Map based ratings

It’s been stupidly hot for the last few days. Christmas day was the hottest since 1968 (41Β°), and Boxing day was the hottest December day since records began (44Β°). It’s a bit cooler today, but the humidity is brutal – so I’m not really in the mood to write about Christmas apart from that I had a very enjoyable breakfast of fruit, nuts and croissants at Rebecca and Dom’s, and a full Christmas lunch over at the Aunts’.

I figured instead I’d talk about the Great Gryffin of London.

Its eye is at Battersea Power Station, and its snout at Victoria station. One paw lies over Buckingham Palace, and the other the British Museum. Its heart is at Waterloo and its chest on the Victoria Embankment. Its wings spring from the Elephant and Castle and the Imperial War Museum, stretching to Clapham North and Herne Hill. Its feet lie at Bethnal Green and Stepney, and its knees at Shoreditch. Its rump sits neatly at Bricklayers Arms, and its tail stretches down the Thames to Greenland Dock.

See if you can spot it next time you’re in London:)

Take heed – ’cause I’m a Taurine Poet

Check out the bull while the DJ revolves it

I got into work today (it was meant to be my day off but we’ve got so much to do before the Christmas break that I went in) and discovered – much to my annoyance – that someone had stolen my Red Bull!

(I keep a sugar free Red Bull in the office fridge, each morning I drink it and replace it with another one.)

Now some people might stick a note on their new can of Red Bull – something along the lines of “Hands off you thieving Micromine bastards!”. But why be crude when you can interesting? So my new can of Red Bull is now adorned with the following epigram…

Extra hours each week I pull,
So cursed be he who takes my Bull,

(OK it’s not a very good epigram, but it should get the message across πŸ™‚

A Return to Form

General ramblings

Well, it’s been a while hasn’t it? I just haven’t really been in the mood for writing lately – too much on at work, figuring out what to get people for Christmas, that kind of thing. I have been doing stuff, I just haven’t been very motivated to write about it.

Let’s see if I can throw together some edited highlights. Had a Thanksgiving dinner with the parents’ next door neighbours (they’re Americans, they didn’t just decide to celebrate Thanksgiving for the hell of it :). It was most enjoyable – much to my surprise pumpkin pie is actually fairly delicious – although I was slightly disappointed that we didn’t go around the table saying what we were thankful for. Television has lied to me once again!

I’ve been up to Fabian’s place a few times and done some workouts on the $8000 or so home gym he’s invested in. Let me tell you, he’s a pretty hard taskmaster when he gets into personal trainer mode. His mantra is “failure is success”, meaning that you keep working until your muscles completely fail and you have to curl up in a sobbing ball in the corner for a few hours. I’m thinking of making up a 1984 style poster for his wall FABIAN’S GYM: “War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength; Failure is Success.” πŸ˜€

I was actually up there again last weekend for another session of the Wild Southwest game I’m running (it’s only been, oh, three years or so since the last one). It didn’t go as well as I planned because I’m so horribly out of practice at GM-ing, but everyone seemed to have a good time, which is the main thing. I’m hoping to run the next session in the new year – that one should go a bit smoother now I’m back in the saddle.

We actually played until about 11:00 at night, which takes me back to the AD&D games we played in high school. We’d play until 2:00am, collapse wherever seemed convenient, get up at 8:00 and keep playing. I’m obviously getting old, because this time around I was a complete wreck the next day πŸ™‚

The new Government is yet to do anything really annoying, and has actually some some things I really approve of (signing Kyoto for instance). This puts me in a kind of weird place – for the last 11 years being angry with the Government has beenΒ  part and parcel of my daily existence. I mean, they’re sending the Navy out to chase the Japanese whaling fleet for crying out loud! How can I possibly get all mad and righteous about that!? Sooner or later they’d better stuff up, or I’ll have to find another hobby.

I’ve caught up with Rebecca and Dom a few times, young Jakob seems to be doing well and is actually sleeping now, so they’re getting some decent rest (well, decent for new parents anyway). I’ll be going over to their place for breakfast on Christmas day, I’ll have to check the exact time they want me to show up I suppose.

In health news I managed to contract food poisoning from an extremely dodgy chicken wrap I bought from the supermarket over the road from work. I’ve been buying food there for almost seven years now with no problems so I decided not to dob them in to the authorities over just one case of almost killing me. I’m not eating their chicken again though.

Well, that’s probably enough to be going on with for now. Hopefully forcing myself to write this will get me back into the blogging habit. Hopefully πŸ™‚

The Evil Empire is Dead and we have their Booze!

Gloria! Gloria! (do do-do-do-do-do-do do-do-do-do-do do-do-do) Gloria! Gloria! ect.

Well the results are in (enough of them at any rate) and Labor has well and truly won the election! Here ends John Howard’s evil reign of terror! Let Kevin Rudd’s evil reign of terror begin!

What’s more it looks like Howard may have lost his seat, which would make him only the second Prime Minister in Australian history to do so – the last being Bruce in the 1920s (by the way, isn’t it cool that one of our Prime Ministers was named ‘Bruce‘? πŸ™‚

In addition there seems to have been quite a swing to the Greens here in Western Australia (at least that’s the impression I get from Kerry O’Brian – in between his snide comments about the behaviour of the press teams from the other networks). Not enough for them to get a seat of course, but it’s a start and might make some people sit up and take notice.

The only thing that could really make the night complete would be for the minor parties to get control of the Senate. It doesn’t seem very likely since the self destruction of the Democrats a few years back, but we can live in hope.

(Hmmm, iTunes just served up Handel’s Gloria and See the Conquering Hero Comes, and the New Pornographers’ The Laws Have Changed. Coincidence? πŸ™‚

One More Day

One more day ’till revolution, if they don’t nip it in the bud, He went on Rove for all the schoolkids, so they’ll vote for Kevin Rudd

Well, tomorrow it’s the Federal Election when (with a bit of luck) we’ll finally get rid of Howard and the Coalition after ten long years. The polls are all suggesting a Labor landslide so my hopes are up, although I’m not going to tempt fate by calling it yet. Tomorrow’s going to be an interesting day for us all…

Of course I don’t expect that things will be any better under Labor – I’m not an idiot. But at least it’ll mean a new team in control of things. There was actually a very good essay on the subject of long serving governments in one of the papers yesterday. I can’t seem to find a copy of it but the basic point was that once a given party’s been in power for more than about eight years it tends to go nuts and think that it has some kind of God-given mandate to do whatever it likes – usually under the guise of “the will of the people” – and will do absolutely anything to hold onto power. So you need to make sure the government changes before that happens. Frankly that’s exactly what seems to have happened with the coalition over the last few years (Workchoices anyone?), so we desperately need to throw them out and start over.

Anyway one good thing about being this close to the election is that there’s no more political advertising on the TV or radio. Federal law or common sense or old charter or something prohibits it for two days before the actual election. Supposedly this is to allow the voters uninterrupted time to mull things over, but I suspect it’s to prevent politicians out on the hustings from being murdered by members of the public driven crazy by the incessant name-calling, shouting and propaganda flooding out of their screens. Not to mention the written and authorised by joe bloggs for the australian loonies party canberra gabbled out at breakneck speed at the end of each add. It’s been particularly bad this year – I’ve noticed that whenever the subject of the election has come up in conversation people aren’t discussing the issues, they just complain about the adds.

In any case the day is almost here and in terms of my own electorate there’s a good range of candidates standing. We’ve got Greens and Socialists, Christians and Independants, and even a contingent from the CEC, who I hoped might be the Centre for Elephant Conservation (they’d get my vote!), but turned out to be a bunch of conspiracy cranks led by Lyndon LaRouche who claim that anyone who criticises them is a tool of the Queen’s Privy Council (or at least that’s what Wikipedia implies, and why would they lie?). There’s also the usual fifty odd candidates for the Senate – I’ve got things to do tomorrow so I don’t think I’ll spend all morning numbering them individually below the line.

One more sleep and it’s all over (bar the counting, analysis and Chaser roundup). I have the strangest urge to hum One More Day πŸ˜€

A Pointless Observation

They changed the theme music! Significance!

As all should know, in the United States the theme music for television’s House is the song Teardrops by Massive Attack. Everywhere else (for copyright reasons) they use a similar piece of music – originally composed for the end theme of the show – instead.

However, last week’s episode (which I taped and have only just got around to watching) had the Massive Attack theme!

So, will this anomaly continue in tonight’s episode (which I probably won’t get around to watching until the weekend)? And what does it all mean?

In a Perfect World…

Wookiee holo-chess eat your heart out!

Chess would be a lot more interesting if you had a set that like the one in the video clip for Puscifer’s Queen B

Queen B Chess

(There’s some mild CGI animated demonic nudity, so probably NSFW or delicate minds)

In a perfect world your chess pieces would do funky co-ordinated war dances before moving, the bishops would be drunkards, and the pawns would hop like toads! πŸ™‚

Not Everyone is Named Steve

Wheat wheat wheat wheat!

From time to time at work we run tests on our client’s email forms to make sure that they’re working properly. This involves sending some test messages ourselves, and keeping an eye on actual messages going through the system for a short while.

Now today we were doing exactly this when someone sent a message through to a client (professional courtesy forbids me from saying who), asking a whole bunch of highly technical questions about one of their products. This is nothing unusual, but what caught my eye was the name of the person sending it. Emer.

Yes, Emer.

Now, naturally I would never be crazy enough to do do anything of the sort, but my head was filled with visions of replying to this email on the client’s behalf. The correspondance would go something like this…

Hi,

I was wanting some information about the Xyz123. Is it compatible with the Astora PQ interface, and if so what version? I’ve been told there are some problems with version 4. Also are the EDO plugs gold standard or platinum, and does it come with Sable pre-installed? And does the interface meet ISO 2365? If you can let me know I’ll be very interested in making a purchase.

Thanks, Emer

Hi Emer,

Did you know you’re named after wheat?

Can you imagine Emer’s face when he/she opens the reply!? Can you!?! πŸ˜€

I’ve been stupidly busy at both work and home recently, hence the lack of updates. Hopefully I’ll be able to get some time for writing and emailing soon.
